Why Are Moulding Injection So Expensive?
1. Material cost
Injection Molding are subjected to thousands of pounds of pressure and heat per cycle. Therefore, the mold needs to be made of a strong and durable material that can withstand harsh operating conditions without deformation. These molds are usually made of different grades of steel or aluminum.
The choice of mold material may depend on the number of parts to be produced. The more parts to be produced, the better quality and more expensive steel should be used.
2. Mold structure
A variety of complex components are manufactured and assembled using a range of manual and automated processes to form injection molds or die tools to guarantee a reliable and repeatable injection molding process. These parts use specialized machinery (including CNC machining and EDM(electric discharge machining)) to form tight tolerances, which greatly increases the cost.
3. Mold complexity and aesthetics
Some mold design decisions, such as side pull, cavity count, texture, multi-material shooting, tight tolerances, engraving, undercutting features, insertion, etc., will also significantly increase mold costs. While costly, these design decisions may be necessary or beneficial in the later stages of the process.
4. Labor cost
Don't forget to factor in labor costs. Designing, manufacturing and assembling injection moulds is a labor-intensive and complex process that takes time and skill to do properly. Injection mold manufacturers and designers are highly trained experts and are not cheap. If you're stingy about this, you may end up paying for these costs later.
